Why does this claim work, what makes capitalism tolerable? Haven't read Hayek, so I'll interpret with some assumptions: - capitalism has effectively random winners and losers - losers respond to failure with a scapegoating impulse (i.e. desire to externalize their failure)

I don't completely buy it, because even a perfectly just capitalism is just rewarding people based on properties assigned by birth or other deterministic factors, and determinism is in a sense equally arbitrary to chance, because there is still no final justification for it.

Zizek's argument is that capitalism's essential arbitrariness is why it is just, in the sense of mimetic desire. Better psychologically to lose as one temporarily embarrassed millionaire among many vs losing when everyone's supposed to be "equal".
