I think I exemplify this better than anyone, since I spent most of my time as a CS student at a top 20 engineering college studying Chaos Magick, Aliester Crowley, Jung, RD Liaing etc.

"Twisted fractal of esoteric subject matter" is probably excessively generous. I've read maybe 200 books in my life, and went into esotericism with little classical education and a mostly Popperian social and philosophical outlook.

Overwork, at least relative to ability. I didn't learn even basic Algebra until I was 25. K-9 education consisted of beatings, and grades 10-12 of me fucking around on the internet under the hilariously flimsy cover of home schooling
