But he cheated himself. No, the real problem is he was so used to being smarter than everyone else that he didn't bother having a theory of mind for his opponent, thinking one level of trickery was sufficient for any opponent, instead of considering possible counters.

I mean it was an unwinnable game, and he was right to think that he wasn’t going to beat Marty Sue in any other type of contest. Backed against a wall he played a bad hand as well as he could.
