I suspect our deepest drives are more rational than the parts of us we call "rational", we just either don't know or don't want to face up to the objective function they're aiming at.
And in men it typically reflects a former of thanatophilia. However, human drives are overwhelmingly irrational in general, so the only real question is whether they are sublimated to productive ends
