An addendum: the amount of intelligence it takes for an animal to respond to, mimic etc other animals is probably much lower than the amount needed to respond directly to the environment
I think autism is probably less a neurological disorder and more what happens when ethological patterns lose salience in relation to environmental patterns. This probably explains its correlation with intelligence.
