    However, after all recent laws to subjugate internet and freedom of speech, it's hard to believe Russia's is able to make user friendly regulations. It's rather one more step to a greater state control over information. 4/4

    Seems like, Russia is joining a global trend in making social networks more transparent. Just yesterday, US Democratic lawmakers proposed to make social networks legally responsible for personalized recommendations of harmful content to users. 3/4

    A bill will allow users to disable recommendation algorithms in their feeds. Also platforms will have to publish rules how recommendations are used & what information is collected. 2/4

    Fascinating and another argument for keeping the borders open. Let the Russians (especially the younger Russians) see Europe and feel Europe, and - who knows? - we may end up with a very different Russia a generation or so from now.

    Fascinating new survey on homophobia in Russia. Headlines show growing intolerance of same sex partnerships - 69pc, up from 60pc in 2013. But for me the more interesting thing is more than 1/2 of 18-24 are now for it. Progress is never headed by OAPs

    Given ’s actions in recent days, I suppose it was only a matter of time. YouTube has often operated under its own moderation logic. But not this time - and this does not bode well for alternative voices, who rely on it extensively in this case.

    Of course I don’t expect tech giants to fight for democracy and free elections in Russia but what we’ve seen this year is a constant retreat. It provokes the Kremlin to push more. And it will push for more bc it's not about the election, it is an offensive on internet freedoms.
