I fully understand why it'll be a while, if ever, until the handshake returns. But I don't get all the celebrations of its demise. It always struck me as egalitarian and trusting--exactly the opposite of takes like this.https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2020/05/good-riddance-handshake/611404/ …

The distrust implicit in anti-handshake takes is exactly what I was getting at here, early in the crisis:https://twitter.com/AlecMacGillis/status/1233861827907530754 …

It must be said, one of the secondary unfortunate consequences of #coronavirus is that it validates, for foreseeable future, the guarded mindset: beware your fellow man, obsess over germs, keep to yourself. That has never been the most pleasant type. Now, it gets to be "right."

Totally agree. It was, particularly between men, the only socially acceptable way to make physical contact -- and as you say -- to get trust off to a good start.

Yes, and those of us who are blind get a lot of information from handshakes and other incidental physical contact. I will miss that.

I look at what’s going on in the “reopening states” and I do not see how anyone thinks the handshake is or will be gone. Maybe up here where most are wearing a mask most or all of the time and ppl are burdened by education, but not in most of this country.

The way that ppl in most of the country would stop shaking hands would be to make up some bullshit story about it being an ancient homosexual ritual and then putting the message on a ill-fitting red baseball cap.

And extremely male. I have the exact opposite idea of it, as divisive, as a power move, and limited to those who have typical use of their hands.

Interesting. The way I think of everything is "what is its intent" Or, for people, "what is their intent". I think with the handshake, it can be very effective in creating intimacy between strangers. But yes, I have also seen it as you descibe, but usually from the "people" -

My first thought—The Handshake. It feels like intimidation. And I'm good at it. Egalitarian, my ass. Don't touch me.
