And notice on the hi resolution @NWSAlaska analysis, there is now connected open water from the Bering Sea into the Chukchi to 67N. You could sail you boat to north of the Arctic Circle. In February. Through the Bering Strait. Think about it. #Arctichttps://twitter.com/AlaskaWx/status/965289324114673664 …

As expected, sea ice extent in the Bering Sea has decreased. For Feb 17, by far lowest in @NSIDC record & only 37% of 1981-2010 median. Mid-Feb 2001 was similar on the Alaska side but much more ice in Russian waters. #Arctic #akwx @Climatologist49 @ZLabe @lisashefguy @DaveSnider pic.twitter.com/GeyNvti0r4

Come on, you act like open water in the Bering Sea is something new. I've lived there since the '50s, seen it many times before. There was very little snow or ice during the winter of 1970, for example.

Looks like a small and rare mid-winter sea ice dip in the Chukchi Sea today from the NSIDC passive microwave data. All years are actually shown on this graph.pic.twitter.com/pG3HUVjk0m

Didn't 1989 also have a little dip off of 100% in Feb?

Wind patterns R important 2 moving the ice around. Anyone attempting to take their yacht up that way now would easily die in the attempt.

Shifts in the winds would make openings like this highly volatile.
