Well if that isn't a red flag! Poor to no salmon catch at HPB. Decent in Black River, but Yukon is closed. Rick, any water temperature obs for the Yukon or Kuskokwim Rivers?

Global surface area above +5°C anomaly in OISSTv2 reached 966,000 sq-km on June 20, which is the highest on record for this early in summer - with the largest contribution from the Bering/Chukchi. Larger areas above +5°C have occurred in July-September, e.g. 2007, 2011, 2016.pic.twitter.com/7J5NJf0Q29

It takes an awful lot of energy to warm the Ocean. Much more than normal air temperature fluctuation.
-
Usually it is due to subsurface current with a higher temperature that does it. Oceans aren't stationary, homogeneously temperatured bodies.

Hi Rick. I'm a grad student in Montana working on a paper about SST anomalies and harmful algal blooms in AK. Do you have similar data to this map but over a longer period of time that you might be able to direct me to?

These are all from NOAA's hi-res OISSTv2 (post-1981) data. Convenient access through the ESRL/PSD website below: https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/data/gridded/data.noaa.oisst.v2.highres.html …

Time to declare a climate emergency?

That was 5 years ago, but better late than never, I suppose.
