It should not be big news that Anchorage temperatures are forecast, in January, to drop below 0F (-18C) . But that's where we're at.

As in so many things climate-wise, the Panhandle marches to the beat of different drummer than mainland Alaska.

2018 in Juneau ranks as the tenth warmest year of record: the very warm summer was partially offset by the very chilly February. The step increase in temperatures in 1976 is dramatic: only one year (1982) has been colder than the pre-1976 average.

Fairbanks: 2018 was the fifth warmest year since 1930. There no steady warming trend in recent decades. Currently, the step change in 1976 separates colder & warmer eras. But…there is an apparent step-up in 2013. Time will tell if we're at a new plateau.

Congrats, Anchorage: 2018 not only brings the biggest earthquake in 55 years, it also ties with 2014 as the second warmest year at Anchorage Airport (since 1954). The four mildest years are 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

St. Paul ranks 2018 as third warmest year in the past century, with four of the ten warmest years occurring since 2014. A small island in the middle of the Bering Sea, St. Paul temps strongly reflect SSTs and the presense (absence) of winter/sping .

Bethel clocks in with 2018 as the second warmest year in 95 years of records & four of the six warmest years have been since 2014. The trend line is now above freezing, an ominous sign for permafrost in the region.

Nome finishes up with 2018 as the fourth warmest year of record. December was the only month colder than normal. Four of the five warmest years have been since 2004, and the typical year is now nearly 3F (1.6C) warmer than in the 1960s.

2018 was another exceptional year for Alaska climate and will rank in the top five warmest years of record. Among the most unusual events were the very low sea ice in the Bering Sea Feb to May and southern Panhandle drought.

From the ghost of cold snaps past, your annual reminder of what has been and what might (but probably won't) be yet to come. For the long-term climate sites, there have been no all-time record lows set since January 1989.

If accurate, the high temperature at King Salmon on Sunday of 53F (12C) is a new daily record and 1F from the all-time December record high of 54F set Dec 06 2013.
