All those packages you're ordering from Amazon? Someone has to deliver them. For one day, I was that person. It was kind of awful.

White, blue-collar, economically struggling areas? They're still struggling under Trump. But many *wealthy* Republican suburbs (which also voted for Trump, but get less attention) are thriving.

Driverless trucks will replace the best-paying jobs in the trucking industry, and give rise to more unstable Amazon Flex-type jobs, unless policymakers take action, sociologist Steve Viscelli finds in a new report about self-driving trucks.

The "Great Doubling" of the global workforce, as millions more people access education and come online “presents the U.S. economy with the greatest challenge since the Great Depression,” a Harvard economist predicted a decade ago.

Another excellent piece capturing the twin anxieties of technology and globalization. The global gig economy, and digital services more broadly, provide millions with new opportunities. But many others see their careers and lives upended

. another question to ask is to what extent the status quo in these respective places (like Serbia) forces workers to offer their skills via such platforms. it's not just the internet that is failing us at protecting workers -- it's also our governments.

I was surprised at the stellar quality of the $5 short story and $5 love letter I bought on Fiverr. But what happens when talented people keep lowering their prices to compete with workers around the world and win clients?

The Fairwork Foundation is featured in this new piece on the global gig economy's race to the bottom.

"There really is a race-to-the-bottom effect going on here, because there’s so much of an oversupply of workers,” Mark Graham, an Oxford professor who studies digital labor platforms, told me.

More than half of the world -- around 4 billion people -- now have internet access. People all over are offering to write ebooks, design logos, do architectural designs on online gig platforms, often for just $5. That creates a whole lot of competition.

Great piece by on rich people who say they're changing the world through philanthropy while at the same time making it worse through their and their companies' actions. Looking forward to reading his book!

I should add, someone has to deliver all those packages you're buying online. A lot of times, that job is hazardous and stressful, as I wrote about here. Below, the bruised leg of a woman who says she got attacked by a pit bull while delivering for Amazon.
