Lots of takeaways from an interview I just did with a gastroenterologist. One of them—should I have known this?—is that faxes (!!!) are still a primary way that physicians send and receive information. "the only industry left that does it"

This is concerning in all kinds of ways, but perhaps most of all, for patients with complicated medical records and lots of history, it seems like this would really make it hard for their new doctor to get a full picture.

That's a good point, and he mentioned that...at the same time there are many, many industries that deal with secure information without having to use faxes, no?

Yes sir. Medical offices are singlehandedly keeping the #FaxMachine industry afloat.

Indeed. I once tried to get a report emailed to me but policy was that the report be printed from a computer into a hard copy and then faxed to me. We also still use pagers too. It’s insane

I did not realize the extent of the (literal and figurative) paperwork required for physicians. Just incredibly frustrating, I really feel for you all.

We haven’t abandoned them yet. I still have a pager.

I ditched my fax because a local doctor's number was close to mine, and I didn't want to know about my neighbours' breast cancer or blood pressure. Why couldn't docs/labs send their reports via Pony Express?
