The idea that spiritual and moral purity is linked to social hierarchy–money, birth—is unsurprisingly common. Think "noble", which combines morality and birthplace. Indulgences, the caste system, etc.: you can be born into purity and/or purchase it.

It might not seem like this is what Paltrow is doing, but she is. Instead of God, it's Nature; instead of holiness, it's naturalness. As with caste and nobility, it starts at birth. Normal, common babies are born polluted. But with a goop detox, you can avoid that!pic.twitter.com/jBiebsXqLu

The religious ritual of detoxification—and that's what it is—inextricably binds purity to class, because detoxification rituals are costly and time-consuming. Heavy metal testing. Organic food. Non-toxic cosmetics. Impure commoners don't know about these. Can't afford them.

One typical defense of goop: "It's just rich people wasting their money! If it makes them feel good, let them do it." But that's NOT all it is. It's legitimizing a metaphysics in which purity—physical, moral, and spiritual—COSTS MONEY.

If you have money, you can purify yourself, and it feels good. But a key part of that good feeling is a tacit contrast with IMPURE people: Who eat conventional food. Who don't have time for yoga. Who don't take supplements. Who don't drink water from an $84 crystal bottle.pic.twitter.com/aSXo7rTT4Z

The pseudoscience of goop is terrible. Irresponsible. Harmful. But even if there weren't any science, even if it were straight religion without the science-y "nature" disguise, it would be harmful. It is the consecration of wealth-based purity. And it needs to be called out.

(An equally apt analogy, less well-known than indulgences, is the practice of pew rental, which turned church seating arrangements into maps of economic status, where the rich were quite literally closer to the word of God.)

At any rate, Twitter thread doesn't give quite enough space to work out the nuances/problems with the analogies to various religious practices and beliefs. But I hope people see clearly the general danger, and don't wave this away as harmless nonsense. /end

My Soundcloud is my book, which devotes an entire chapter ("Deepak Chopra's Condo") to a discussion of classist, consecrated consumption—disguised as the spiritual pursuit of natural purity. https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Natures-Goodness-Harmful-Science/dp/0807010871/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=levinovitz+natural&qid=1572208903&sr=8-1 …
