If it’s not part of Islam why do so many Muslims practice it? Not sure how much you can separate the abstract ideal of a religion from its application if you’re going to try and make a useful statement.

I believe it is a practice that was integrated into “Islamic” practice when Islam was brought to places that already practiced it & then exported out to other Muslim countries. All religions absorb some parts of pre-existing cultures.

So in the Hadith, where it promotes FGM and male circumcision, is it just kidding?

Possibly that Hadith (re FGM) was added later to appease those existing traditions. I’m not coming at this from a position of belief, so I don’t assume either the Koran or the Hadiths are the word of any god. Circumcision was a pre-existing Abrahamic thing.
