P.S. Would the depth be created in the stereogram if it was just concentric circles without the spiral illusion? I think it is the apparent spirals that create the cone/depth, like the thread of a screw, forcing it to either be like a funnel or to jut out of the screen.

That gives it an element of depth to the spirals/circles! A given frame is either a cone projecting out of the screen, or a cone projecting in like a funnel. But then any given frame can also suddenly flip between the two!
