Patterns are aligned vertically and horizontally, but they appear to wave. Moreover, there appear to be dark-gray turtles and light-gray ones, though they are the same luminance.pic.twitter.com/Yo6qtIkYPg
Some turtles are outlined in white, some in black. That makes them different colours on average.
Precisely. Like in many of such illusions, what our visual system sees in the image can be revealed by taking averaged intensities. It works even better for color illusions, because our vision does not have very good spatial resolution for colors.https://twitter.com/generuso/status/931992749108269056 …
If we blur this image, the causes of the illusion become easier to understand:pic.twitter.com/sYpdro0qAH
1. We see dark-gray turtles and light-gray ones, because they are NOT the same luminance, if averaged over the area -- though they do have identical luminance at their center points. 2. Similarly, on the large scale, the texture is "bent," which is what we see.pic.twitter.com/iMZxOQrxly
