To be fair, the ratio of square size to letter sizes is smaller in your pics, so it is not a fair comparison. Having said that, I am sure if you did it with the same ratio, you would still be correct.
This is not particularly surprising as the second image still has more information than the first, and crucial info at that--namely, the location of the missing pieces.
So, of course amodal completion works in the second case but not the first.
Instead of full sided squares, how complete would it look with 3 or 2 sided squares?
