If I gaze at the left or right ring, the left seems faster. If I gaze right between them they look like exactly the same speed.

the illusion only seems to work for me if they are in my peripheral vision, otherwise they seem about the same speed for me

Depends on how and where I look. If I look towards the middle where the two are closest each other, same speed. If I look at the right one, the left is faster

The perceived speed depends of the one you focus on. If you pay attention at the right one, the left one seems faster, and viceversa. Beautiful illusion!
