I wonder if this trick was ever used by retro #gamedev programmers to avoid computing expensive transformations and achieve the same "rotation" effect.

Aha, yes. Well, now thinking again... I'm pretty sure a simple two-frame animation loop could be used to trick the brain. I'm certain that that was used all over, even I did that in some of my projects. I think Akiyoshi's example plays with color/luminance in a more complex way.
