    Tonight in 1940, Germans dropped 100K bombs on . The Blitz air raid caused "Second Great Fire of London," w/ 160 dead & much damage. During raid, a wall collapsed, killing 2 auxiliary firemen & narrowly missing 3rd; 3rd painted haunting piece evoking night's terror.

    3) I knew him very well through his community service, & also because he worked w/ my parents & his daughter was in my class. Later, he kept up w/ my work , often sending very kind notes of support. RIP, Bob Brandenburg: a good Kansan & a great man.

    2) Robert "Bob" Brandenburg led an extraordinary life. In 1950, at 12, he contracted polio. He never let it limit him. (And Parsons rallied around him, e.g., carrying his wheelchair up & down stairs during his school years.) He became a community mainstay in every way possible.

    1) At the heart of so many small, rural towns is a cadre of citizens willing to sacrifice personal time to participate in civic life: heading school boards, serving as leaders, helping local community colleges. My hometown of Parsons, KS just lost such a citizen.
