Venetia was married to Russ Tamblyn before Everly. Tamblyn was in lots of things, but I have a soft spot for his turn as Dr Jacoby in Twin Peaks. I love old Hollywood dynasty rabbit holes. Reminds me of my home village. Everyone is connected to everyone if you dig a little bit.

Venetia Stevenson with Elvis. She was the daughter of Robert Stevenson (director: Mary Poppins, Darby O’Gill, Bedknobs and Broomsticks etc) and mother of Erin Everly, the woman who inspired Axel Rose to write Sweet Child O’Mine. Erin’s father was Don Everly of The Everly Brothers

This is just great advertising. I was going to see it anyway, but now I really really want to see it!

Just left a screening of “Beau Is Afraid.” Before credits started rolling 1 guy in audience stood up and yelled “I better not hear a single person f***ing clap.” Another dude screamed “that’s the worst movie I’ve ever seen.” A girl yelled “total piece of shit” #BeauIsAfraid

Boudica's sack of London was so savage that there is to this day a layer of earth containing ash, soot and burnt artefacts denoting that past, catastrophic event. Archaeologists call it ‘Boudica’s destruction horizon'.

The only sex ed provided in the school I went to when I was 15/16 was this film and a talk on abstinence by a priest. He said “you could fit all the virgins in this school into a phone box” like something from Derry Girls. They wondered why the teen pregnancy rate was so high 🫠

This is so cute because everyone lives in whitewashed stone cottages and the only light comes from the sky or an oil lamp. We must seem so whimsical! Not a Supermacs in sight.

- for economic or any other reasons, if I do I would be agreeing to be a Negro makes me inferior and that I have swallowed whole hog all of the propaganda dished out by our fascist-minded white citizens.” - Fredi Washington

“You see, I'm a mighty proud gal and I can't for the life of me, find any valid reason why anyone should lie about their origin or anything else for that matter. Frankly, I do not ascribe to the stupid theory of white supremacy and to try to hide the fact that I am a Negro (cont)

She would go into whites only ice cream parlours and buy ice cream for the whole tour bus. She could have used the same ‘passing privilege’ in her career but she refused to turn her back on her people. She was extremely brave and principled.

Fredi Washington was a white passing actress with mixed African American lineage. She refused to take advantage of this in her career and proudly held onto her cultural and ethnic identity. She was married to Duke Ellington’s trombonist for a while and used to tour with them.

My husband rewrote Subterranean Homesick Blues in the first covid lockdown. He nailed the metre, internal rhyme, and the absurdity of the time I think.

I’m giving an undergrad lecture on subtext tomorrow. This is one of the scenes I’m using. Before Sunrise (1995) in a record shop listening to Come Here by Kath Bloom.
