As an Orthodox Jewish woman, now agnostic, I cover my hair as the price for keeping family peace, and to avoid social ostracism. It is chains. I despise it. I stand with all #women and our right to choose what we wear, free from all pressures, physical or social. #FreeFromHijab

i'm hesitant to wade into this, but i'd note that within the orthodox communities in which women can be ostracized over headcoverings, men generally face ostracization for, say, wearing a brightly colored shirt, let alone not wearing a yalmuka. its not strictly a gender issue.

Yes of course. But women are under much more restrictions in dress. And trust me a colourful shirt guy is going to still get an aliyah in shul but if I uncover my hair many people will stop eating in my home.
