Instead of defensively saying, "We want you to know that we are no less Muslims and no less Afghans than you," they should say, "We want you to accept our constitution, respect our hard-won gains, stop using terrorist tactics against civilians, stop making war."

Instead of starting the conference by ceding so much ground before even a word is exchanged, start by asserting your own values and draw a sharp contrast. If you fail to do this now, there's little hope that you will stand up for rights and gains when the going gets tough.
