Gun and knife crime is an economics issue. Don't see how religion fixes it. El Salvador is pretty much 100% Catholic with huge religious participation. Doesn't really stop them killing each other.

You’re looking at it on an extremely short time scale and also ignoring that before Christianity the basic ethic was eye-for-an-eye and Christ says the opposite. That doesn’t mean anyone listens. Over the past 2000 years the Catholic Church has been very civilizing.
