It doesn’t tell you to do those things, just to not do them yourself. Your prejudice shows on your sleeve

Also note that the ten commandments appear in Exodus and Deuteronomy and those books command specific punishments. Worshipping other gods: death. (Deuteronomy 13:6-10) Blasphemy: death. (Deuteronomy 18:20) Not observing the Sabbath: death. (Exodus 31:14)

Agree on that one but mostly that it was “corrected” in Christianity. I tend to agree with you but don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water or mistake the unintelligible with the undintelligent. I don’t think the superficial reasons always match the real ones

In Matthew 5:17-18 Jesus makes it clear that the old laws outlined in places Deuteronomy and Exodus should be upheld and unchanged. While the culture changes, Christianity always has the potential to return to the cruel, incivil and unwise text of the Bible.
-
He says to keep my commandments and that the law should be upheld Meaning the mosaic law on the stone tablets. Not the pharisaical nit picky dietary restrictions and definitely not the stonings.
-
In Matthew 5:18 Jesus directly contradicts you, stating, "For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."
-
But what does he mean by law, always took that as mosaic law meaning the Ten Commandments.
-
Actually fairly sure that’s what he means, especially given his views on Pharisees and violence, and especially given Paul saying people can eat meats etc
-
Part of why the commandments and bible are "antiquated" are their lack of clarity and the contradictions in the text. The bible is self-contradictory and contradictory to the far clearer moral imperatives and instructions we have access to today.

When our overwhelmingly Christian legislative branch stops writing policy that reflects their beliefs about reality, I'll drop that prejudice.
-
So on policy you have the same or a differing opinion as personally?
