Christian baptism seems to be an inverse stoning. Your friends (enemies) gather around you and give praise (insults). You are submersed in water (killed) as a means of entrance (expulsion) from the community. There is of course deeper reasoning but it seems striking.
Which doesn’t seem very Christlike especially compared to Dirk Williams but so it goes. I don’t intend to scapegoat the past or defend all those who’ve called themselves Christians.

That is a good question (which means I don't have a good answer). For our purposes it's basically a group which claims the bible but does not believe in basics of propitiation. But I recognize that is very wiggly.

Interesting, so would you consider Christus Victor atonement as heretical?
-
Almost certainly no. Right now I am talking about the practice of an actual church community. It is unlikely that the distinction between Christus Victor(which I just looked up) and penal substitution would come up during the process to baptism.
