When you are prognosticating about the rise and fall of civilizations how are you supposed to make falsifiable claims? If liberalism was structured to fail but hadn't failed yet you couldn't prove it til it happened. This isn't physics.

If you're tryna make excuses for circular logic, you've already fucked up. Ofc this isn't physics. Liberalism isn't even about civilization (few get this). Fall of civilizations takes centuries to play out and is a time horizon our grandchildren may witness.

All these ppl talking about the death of liberalism should go move to China to back up their words w/actions. You and your family would be dead if you went 20% as far as you did here w/the regime over there. When your kid gets run over by a car and no one cares, then let's talk.

The problem with liberalism is an overemphasis on freedom that leads to alienation that leads to despair. The China comparison is moot. Control societies are not a problem for liberal societies because of liberal societies structural advantage over them. The problems are internal

I agree that liberalism will not save us although I don’t know if I would word it how you did. Liberalism is a good thing, but I’m not sure if we can handle it because we are already so divided that there are no effective scapegoats as they progressively gain allies.

In crunch time, everything moves to poles and those divided in the middle pick sides pretty quick. More importantly, we only need "saving" if we think we need it.

Liberalism as a political project has been great but accompanying the political project has been a moral philosophy that posits that the path to happiness and meaning is freedom from all societal strictures. It is the second piece that is the problem.

If you mean that we allow deconstructionists to live here then yes and if you mean liberal freedom as in I can live a depraved life then yes. We can’t enforce moral strictures without being fascist, no? People should freely choose their religion not be compelled.

There is more to enforcing norms in a society than legislation. Government is only one jurisdiction which influences how people behave. Family, religion and and community also punish bad behavior and encourage good. This problem is not primarily a problem with govt.

So are you just talking about the Death if God or what? Because this is similar to what JBP says about enforced monogamy.

I do not like JBP because he offers no real freedom from the trap that people are in. Solzhenitsyn in his Harvard address offers a great diagnosis of liberalism. Some of it is a bit wacky in a Russian type of way but it is much more right than wrong: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/alexandersolzhenitsynharvard.htm …
