Oppression is something I can't understand. I think it's an inherently Western idea that's not within my cultural framework. Maybe Westerners think that my tiger mom was oppressive, but I certainly didn't experience it that way. It was more like a game and I'm inherently free.

I'm thinking more in terms of colonialism, slavery, genocide...Of course these things have happened throughout history but not on such a global scale

I don't see these things as inherently tied to a race. These are impulses shared by everyone, and when you have a conflict, there necessarily has to be a winner, who happened to have better strategies or technology. Self improvement makes more sense than seeking reparations.

Because otherwise, then the Irish should seek reparations from England, and England needs to seek reparations from Vikings, and everyone in Europe needs to seek reparations from Romans, Persians, etc. Then there's just a endless web of victimhood going nowhere.

The problem with the idea of oppression is that it is demotivating rather than motivating. People want to be proud of their ancestors rather than admitting that their ancestors were dishonorable, pitiful losers(窝囊废). And they seek to become noble ancestors of the future.

To me the ugly truth is more motivating than the convenient lie...

This is true, but dwelling on oppression leads to revenge, which is reciprocal violence, so it's better to move beyond that through forgiveness. This is the message of the New Testament.

So long as one can change the conditions that lead to the original harm though yeah? Forgiving someone for whacking you right before they whack you again seems kind of pointless to me.

"I've come not to bring peace, but a sword." - Matthew 10:34 "Speak softly but carry a big stick." - Teddy Roosevelt Peterson also talks about how you have to be dangerous yet also avoid participating in violence in order to be respected. IMO this is the solution. @Ahimsa_Satya_

I don’t really want to enter this discussion atm, but reading brothers Karamazov and observing history, ultimate justice seems to only be possible for me from a Christian standpoint. Otherwise it’s an infinite regress of resentment and revenge.

Additionally, the entire victim vs oppressor constrict was created by the judeo-Christian stream of thought and only recently stolen by marxists and postmodernists. They’re merely thieves, warping the conception to their own political ends.
