1/I see the Binding of Isaac (עֲקֵידַת יִצְחַק) as a metaphor for the founding of a new people: the patriarch is committed enough to God and tribe to slaughter his son (& thus erase himself from history); but instead of his son's body, he butchers and offers up a ramhttps://twitter.com/MimeticValue/status/1006607984972009472 …

Rene Girard: In the Bible, the sacrifice of Isaac isn't a test of faith for Abraham. It's anthropological evidence of the shift from human sacrifice to animal sacrifice, and this sublimation towards less violence is the grace of God.

The problem with this interpretation is that people have already been doing human sacrifices the whole time. Him sacrificing his son was the norm, not an unique act of devotion.

There is precious little evidence of Girard's thesis that there was some seismic shift in norms around human sacrifice based on the "scapegoat" mechanism; it's on about the same footing as Lacan's theory personhood & ideas of self only emerge when a baby sees a mirror.

Scapegoating regularly - organized scapegoating - IS human sacrifice. But empathy is there and there comes a time when human sacrifice is refused. Then animal (a substitute) sacrifice can replace it. A theory much stronger, and obvious, than Lacan's views.

What would count as evidence tending to falsify the theory?

There is another book, Mimesis and Science by Scott R. Garrels. I’ve read Popper so I have been looking for falsification in Girard. Girard says that he has looked for falsification but has found it ubiquitous in humans, comparing himself to Darwin, which seems ballsy.

How odd that a French intellectual would be immodest :)

What would be a contradictory fact for theory of evolution ? An animal or plant that didn't evolve ? Would it be sufficient to "falsify" the whole theory ? What would be really contradictory would be that NO life form ever evolved. Same problem with Girard's theory of sacrifice.
