I’m at a mall right now, watching teenagers walk past each other, joking with each other. I’m struck by the contrast of the book I’m reading. It’s about serial killers and the resentment they have for society. And all they heinous and brutal acts they do.

But I’m reminded of the history of mankind, and while serial killers may be outliers in their motivations, they’re not outliers in their acts. Homo sapiens have always been a rather violent species. But I look and see, it’s so quiet now.

It makes me wonder whether I underestimated the role of culture. We have all these ideas passing and restricting our actions and even thoughts. These ideas guide us and allow groups of people to scale into the millions. Just how deep do these ideas go?
