Ignore what Doctorow says about Trump in the beginning, but the rest of the podcast was insightful. Write everyday, because surgeons don't make complaints about surgeon's block. To publish is to make your work public to the relevant audience. Connect ideas and people.

Making work public is powerful and was the best thing about the Enlightenment. It motivates you to create something better than if you just kept it to yourself, and you can verify results through adversarial peer review.

More people need to do forbidden research. I normally find activism distasteful, but there's validity in Doctorow's activism regarding Internet privacy and openness. Fictional characters should be opened to fanfiction, rather than controlled by the author.

Privacy is important to avoid a corporate/government controlled feudalism, where you don't get to truly control stuff that you supposedly own. Torrents reverse scarcity mechanism of economics: the more a torrent is in demand, the more it is available.

Counterfeits create an ongoing market for positional goods (such as fashion that signal status), in that as soon as a counterfeit exists, the consumer is compelled to buy the new item from the authentic brand. Interesting economic mimesis mechanism here.
