the worst thing the office did was take the racist, sexist, homophobic, creep boss and turn him into a loveable goof without changing any of those other aspects of his character

The last scene with Jim and Michael sitting there and Michael tells Jim how he put an X on her arm and they just laugh it off is entirely meant for the audience to laugh along with them because "Haha such a silly guy" even though its pretty baf

Nah, drawing the X was demoralizing. We all get that. The office dances a line in comedy, and this scene, like many others, aims to be so absurd, that the audience laughs. It’s not like “omg MGS is racist hahaha” it’s like “how is this human existing in the world lol??”

It’s the same thing as Blazing Saddles or Pierce from Community. The intent is for the audience to laugh at how dumb/wrong/out of touch these characters are. THEY are the butt of the joke, not the people they insult.
