The movement was initiated by Afghan women 6 months ago & consultations in 34 provinces facilitated & supported by Afghan Women’s Network @AWNKabul, @MoWA_gov_af, High Peace Council @AfghanistanHPC, Office of the First Lady of Afghanistan & independent activists.

@AfgWomen4Peace is a movement to unify voices of women with diverse opinions, demands & priorities for peace, from Badakhshan to Kandahar, rural areas to cities. For the first time, women from every province were consulted & their voices incorporated into a declaration.Show this thread -

15,000 women across the country came together in 34 gatherings, one in each province, to raise their voices & discuss what peace means in their own community, what are their expectations & what are the costs of peace.

Their ideas & demands were bold, aspirational & forward-looking, yet solidly grounded in the realities of their daily lives & struggles & focused on issues affecting all Afghans, not just women.

In each provincial consultation, between 200-1000 women joined. The gatherings took place from August 2018 through January 2019, with the first gathering in Kabul & the final one in Farah. Gatherings were not publicized to ensure safety of participants.

Each gathering was led by a panel discussion & presentation by local women, followed by Q+A session & concluded with a declaration for each province & the creation of a provincial committee for representation in future discussions.

Discussion topics included women’s legal & constitutional rights, & their roles in Islam, Afghan culture & society. Women articulated their concerns, expectations, & priorities for a peace process.

The movement was founded on the principle that sustainable peace is inclusive, represents diverse opinions & led by a unified Afghan voice. Afghan women are able to represent themselves & their demands. This is an on-going dialogue & will continue at national & community level.
