Today, Troy McAlister was arraigned on numerous felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated charges for the deaths of Hanako Abe and Elizabeth Platt. My office and I are distraught over this horrific tragedy.

Yesterday, I had a nearly 90-minute heart-wrenching meeting with Ms. Abe's mother, a woman of great strength and kindness. I am meeting with Ms. Platt's family later this week. My office and our Victim Services team are committed to supporting both families.

Although of course no one predicted this tragedy, it is true that my office, and other justice partners, could have done things differently, which might have avoided this terrible outcome.

I have to start with what we could have done differently in house. We are carefully reviewing what happened and how the District Attorney’s Office can work to prevent tragedies like this from occurring in the future.

We are focused on three things as we move forward: holding Mr. McAlister accountable for the harm he caused; supporting the victims’ families; and working internally in our own office and along with our justice partners to make changes to prevent this kind of tragedy.

I don’t understand some of these responses here. Don’t you guys get it? He, Boudin, is responsible for this murder, he might as well have been driving the car. McAllister had been caught and released numerous times, and knew nothing would happen to him. 1/2

Chesa Boudin is responsible for this and needs to be held accountable for this crime. This is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. Mayor, supervisors, what are you going to do about this? Is he going to be able to get away with this, like all the criminals he releases. 2/3
