It's been a tough semester for everybody, so to lighten the mood and provide some extra credit points I posted a meme challenge to my fluid mechanics class The submissions were BRILLIANT Sit back and enjoy this nerdy fluids meme thread. Our students rock

Gerard K. O’Neill is revered figure among many space advocates, but largely forgotten outside of the field. A new documentary attempts to revive interest in the person who, a half-century ago, popularized the concept of space settlements.

The answer, via , turns out to be about 57.5 tons for reusable Starship (i.e. returns to Earth) and 216 tons (expendable to the Moon). Imagine a space program where you can regularly send 100-200 metric tons to the Moon. We _really_ could have a Moon base.

Does anyone have a reliable estimate for how much payload, in metric tons, that a cargo only Starship could get to the lunar surface? I’d love values for round trip, one-way, or both.

Here's one of the most secret yet useful systems on the spacecraft... our toilet! There's a curtain for privacy, and the rest is really just technicalities... let's just say that the only advantage is the view. 😉 Shoutout to its designer !

One year ago today, the United States had not launched crew into orbit for nine years. Today, two Crew Dragon spacecraft are docked to the International Space Station. America's human spaceflight program is back in business.

I've found crosswind landings in MSFS 2020 realistic in the air, but the moment you touch ground you have to kick hard opposite rudder or else you can careen right off the runway. The effect in real life, in the 172 at least, isn't nearly as extreme.

What I want to fix is the weathervaning on the ground. In a crosswind, on touchdown (and takeoff), the wind pushes the tail, causing the nose to turn into the wind. This is far, far stronger in the sim than I've found in real-life, and makes crosswinds a pain.

Now that’s what I call an early morning show! SpaceX zipping by on its way to the ISS at 5:56 a.m. over the Atlantic. More of this, please.
