Didn't Epic offer a megagrant for Blender not long ago? It seems like this is already happening, slowly, maybe not the same amount of companies or money, but then again, Blender only recently became popular in these circles.

i think you're *drastically* underestimating the capital expenditure needed to build the toolchains these OSS tools are vying to replace. i do think this idea holds water though, and i'd love to see it more! it could help drive customer focus too, something OSS trad does poorly

Aye that's totally possible, I worked in AAA for a few years but not so much on the art/toolchain side of things. Are you thinking primarily about the tools themselves, or all the glue and assets ('biped' rig etc.) that are tightly integrated to existing tools?

The big VFX studios could do it. I forget which one, but there was one who had such a Ship of Theseus situation with their customised Maya that they just went ahead and rewrote the editor in-house for scalability's sake
