I wonder what are the conditions for when people injure themselves this way? To progress in flexibility, flexing all the opposing muscles will deepen the stretch, that includes the knees in a pike.

No. I think you can have a little bend in the knees. I've been doing yoga on YouTube a lot and the instructor keeps telling me not to lock them.

If you are just stretching to feel the sensation of stretching then it honestly doesn't matter a whole lot. Most of the danger comes from not having strength and coordination within a full range of motion.

Meaning if you become more flexible but don't have good coordination with the new found flexibility then you're more likely to hurt yourself. (Assuming you are stretching explosively or with high intensity/weights).
