General rule seems to be short-lived species evolved to respond more to short term fluctuations in food availability and other environmental conditions. (First heard this as an argument for why caloric restriction for extreme longevity seems unlikely to work in humans.)

Matt ridleys ‘red queen’ covers it too. It cited rich families as having around a 2:1 prevalence of males. I think the prevalence in presidential families for sons has been diminished after bush, clinton, and obama, since the time of publication.
