I've thought about this experience before and see it as sort of an example of Jeffrey Gray's "behavioral activation theory", where there's heightenened sensitivity to non-reward stimuli ("bittersweet") and novelty but not enough to evoke high energy responding. A middle ground.

There's a beautiful, complex, and violent waterfall in Vermont that would be almost certainly be a fatal kayak run at Spring Flood. It shakes the Earth. I've sat & watched it, postulating pathways, for hours. Tea optional.
