I wonder how much public opinion about taxation would change if instead the system were that taxes weren't automatically withheld, and people had to save and pay it all in bulk every April.

Everybody who makes serious self-employment income (e.g. authors making book advances) knows the pain and outrage of having to actually pay the full income tax due without auto-withholding.

In France, about 85% of your taxes are withheld, and 15% have to be saved & paid at the end of the year. People maintain that the 85% are "paid by the employer, not the employee."

This is basically what happens when you go full 1099. I pay quarterly estimated taxes and each time I narrow my eyes and wonder wtf the government is doing with it, exactly.

the only problem with that is many people don't save and wouldn't have the $$ to pay in bulk.

Thats freelancing. And it can suck. Especially when your client drops your right before tax season.

Why don’t you make a list of spending that you think is frivolous or unnecessary. That would be beneficial and actually move the conversation forward. This is just claiming that people are too stupid to understand how much they pay each year which really doesn’t do anything
