This weekend at a party, I went around asking people, what was their most controversial opinion among the others at that party? I took their opinion and I went around and asked others what they thought, stacking more opinions as I went. All opinions were agreed with by majority.

Not necessarily disagree, but find objectionable (or "problematic", if you will). I wonder whether we ever had a culture where that wasn't the case.

It would have been even better if someone responded with, "My most controversial opinion is talking about my most controversial opinion at a party with strangers."

> fear expressing things that others will disagree with IMO it's more insidious than that; most people don't even seriously entertain thoughts that their ingroup will disagree with. eventually "it doesn't look like anything to me" – ie they can't even conceive of those things

"Expressing things others will disagree with" is worse than useless if the conversation is unlikely to change anyone's mind (much less have a positive impact on the subject) but likely to cause strong, long-lasting conflict.
