Usually around.... 10-12% of twitter poll responses come from women, and I assume that means the same percentage of my followers are women.

I don't see the low percentage of women as a sampling problem as long as we know their percentage (i.e. measured).
The real problem: the larege percentage of men who have similar or close interests on your polls. (i.e. lacking the diversification of men).
