In my twitter polls a surprisingly large amount of people vote for 'small concrete good' as opposed to 'large abstract good' - for example, more people voted to 'save the life of a child' than 'prevent gender roles from reverting to the 1950s'

As a self-identified independent, I find the lack of effort toward common ground in this debate frustrating. The "slippery slope" argument put forward by pro-guners is just as specious as "the government's guns are bigger"

Given the current state of gun regulation, it seems to me that the majority of responsibility for this impasse lies at the feet of the gun rights proponents. Whether by choice or not, their primary argument is being represented as absolutist.
