Conventional relationship theory says: 1. You can’t change people; don’t go into a relationship expecting them to change. 2. You should talk about feelings with your partner to solve problems & connect. But if the other person can’t be changed, talking about problems is futile.

I think most people end up functionally acting on that in the version "you have a limited amount you can change people, don't date people who are too far beyond what you want them to be"
