I met a proper SJW last night at a party. I told her our app will donate to the most effective charities to save the most lives possible, and she was like, "but how do you prevent this from creating a white savior complex?"
I was like, "our money can go farther when helping very poor countries," and she was like, "but you should be addressing the racism and sexism and inequality in our community right here in New York City"
I was like, "New York City is the 1% though - this is one of the most privileged cities in the world, donating here is just the 1% donating to the 1% basically" and she was like, "but because it's the 1% the oppression structures here matter the most."
I was like, "at the end of the day, though, what matters is that we both have good intentions, even if we disagree about how to do the most good, we still want the same thing, we're on the same side."
She was like, "I disagree."
That makes no sense, if anything you could use her own logic and say that opression and sexism is everywhere, and people in poor countries suffer it the most.
Trying to talk context with that line of reasoning blows my mind. Just so happens I'm in NYC today and, yeah inequalities exist, but its not the same. Abject poverty and death without social supports is not what this is.
New York has to dismantle it's privilege so it can be one of the places that actually need donations. Nobody should have anything more than anyone else. #sjwlogic
Not everyone in NYC lives like the 1%
In fact, many live like the 99%.
So its bit odd to say that NYC is simply the 1% in its totality.
There are plenty of poor and disenfranchised people in NY.
