I met a proper SJW last night at a party. I told her our app will donate to the most effective charities to save the most lives possible, and she was like, "but how do you prevent this from creating a white savior complex?"
I was like, "our money can go farther when helping very poor countries," and she was like, "but you should be addressing the racism and sexism and inequality in our community right here in New York City"
I was like, "New York City is the 1% though - this is one of the most privileged cities in the world, donating here is just the 1% donating to the 1% basically" and she was like, "but because it's the 1% the oppression structures here matter the most."
I was like, "at the end of the day, though, what matters is that we both have good intentions, even if we disagree about how to do the most good, we still want the same thing, we're on the same side."
She was like, "I disagree."
Yes, b/c you can't help lift people out of poverty *and* fight sexism/racism...Nope only one or the other and the correct choice is to let poor ppl die so that you can feel good about yourself-This has layers of logic flaw like a non-gmo, organically and sustainably farmed onion.
