What is the etymology of 'pie hole'?

Since I first heard it in the army, my guess is that its another creative insult thought up by some NCO once upon a time.

Pie Hole, noun. 1. The facial orifice into which one shoves pie (i.e. the mouth).
Origin. Possibly an American variant of the British term "cake hole" from where the term 'pie' is thought to have originated in the 12th century.
