I have a continuous nagging suspicion that the "men as oppressors throughout history" narrative is only taking hold because our society has grown to value masculine traits more than feminine, and thus see history through a male-advantaged lens. Not sure though.

Where the "patriarchy" exists, modern feminist theory basically stops there. All things belong on a spectrum, but there are two very divided classes of men with women sandwiched between. Ruling men control everyone, value women as a commodity, and tread on other men.
-
As you said, women don't have nearly the autonomy the ruling men have, while low-class men serve as soldiers, do dangerous work (like mining), and make up the vast majority of homeless people (at least in the west).

Everyone is definitely more safe, but men still generally seen as disposable. Expected to put yourself in the middle of violent confrontations to end them, work unending hours sacrificing family life, having to register to be drafted for access to political rights, etc.

thats an interesting take. yes, men and women are different with different abilities but thats ok. can their contributions to society overlap and their traits be considered gender-neutral? yes. we need to accept that different people are different.
