I read it wrong, I assumed the - was more of like an equal sign, but I'm still confused, what exactly does a negative life entail? I'm assuming it means no life?

Everyone picking Omelas thinks they won’t have the -10/10 life. Not taking that risk.

Since the range in life quality scores appears to be [-10..10], a life quality of 5 is in the 75th percentile of potential goodness. Seems like an obvious choice to pick that one and avoid the risk of being one of the -10.
