If I wanted to buy a smartphone in Korea, would there be any weird problems or incompatibilities once I return to the US?

maybe i misread the article, but it seems like it's talking about getting a smartphone that will work in asia, not getting a smartphone in asia that will work in the us?

Biggest issue would be making sure the phone is unlocked and not tied to a specific Korean carrier.
Assuming it's an unlocked phone, it would depend on which LTE bands it supports. If that doesn't work you'd be stuck on HSPA+ or lower here.
Do you have a specific phone in mind?

Most networks in ROK is CDMA types. In US, only Verizon is CDMA compatible as far as I can remember. So, if you plan to use GSM network when you come back, CDMA inly phone may be a problem.

the Xiomi phones seem to work pretty much anywhere once unlocked, just make sure you get a GSM phone and not a CDMA phone

The camera shutter sound will always be on, no ability to silence it.
The reason? Subway upskirt shots. I wish I was joking.
