maybe i misread the article, but it seems like it's talking about getting a smartphone that will work in asia, not getting a smartphone in asia that will work in the us?

Biggest issue would be making sure the phone is unlocked and not tied to a specific Korean carrier. Assuming it's an unlocked phone, it would depend on which LTE bands it supports. If that doesn't work you'd be stuck on HSPA+ or lower here. Do you have a specific phone in mind?

Most networks in ROK is CDMA types. In US, only Verizon is CDMA compatible as far as I can remember. So, if you plan to use GSM network when you come back, CDMA inly phone may be a problem.
